Like apples of gold in settings of silver are words spoken at the right time

Proverbs 25:11

3 Ways to Communicate that Will Up Your Joy

No one likes tough conversations. They are often stressful and usually riddled with words we don’t mean. But successful relationships demand that you face them head-on. When and how you communicate can elevate or derail your joy. So whether you’re at the office or at home, the following three tips keeps joy in the room no matter how challenging the chat.

“Like apples of gold in settings of silver are words spoken at the right time.” – Proverbs 25:11

Communicate on Time: When

“Like apples of gold in settings of silver are words spoken at the right time.” Proverbs 25:11 You can’t get any more communication rich than apples of gold in settings of silver. Having tough conversations is challenging enough without adding poor timing to the mix. To make the most of your discussion, engage in conversation when all parties are on solid enough footing to minimize the casualties.

This doesn’t mean everything will be perfect, but the chances your joy will take a hit go way down when the timing is right.

Communicate Honestly: How

I want to start with this: “keeping it real” doesn’t mean “remove all tact.” This is probably one of the most egregious missteps individuals make in their attempt to honestly communicate. Sure, you won’t always get it right. But see the above tip. Practice seasoning your words in advance and you will see you don’t have to leave honesty out of the recipe.

Communicate Respectfully: Another How

We have two teenage sons. We want them to respect us so we respect them. Not that we’re perfect, but we don’t swing our authority around like a baton and beat them over the head with it. Respectful communication is a two-way street, but you can only control your own behavior. Set the tone for a tough talk by being respectful throughout. Listen more than you speak and, whether or not you agree, acknowledge the things you hear.

If you can spare me a moment, I’d love to hear your joyful thoughts in the comments below.
